Computer configuration

Hi everyone,

we are often requested about the optimal computer configuration for running 3DReshaper. Here is the result of our current brainstorm (I tried to summarize).
What you can see is that the configuration will mainly depend on your use cases!

Graphic board
At 3DReshaper, we recommend NVidia graphic boards (Geforce or Quadro) as we can observe a better stability.

In 3DReshaper, the choice of a graphic board will be considered for big mesh display. By big, we mean >2M triangles.
Below this value, a basic Geforce is perfectly fine!

And here are our observations for "big" meshes:

The amount of memory used on the graphic board for different number of triangles is summarized below:
  • 5.8 M triangles -> 300Mo used on the GPU
  • 15 M triangles -> 1Go used on the GPU
  • 60 M triangles -> 3.2Go used on the GPU

As for frame rate, below are our observations:
  • 5.8 M triangles -> 10 FPS on a Geforce GTX660, 16 FPS on a Quadro 600
  • 15 M triangles -> 2 FPS on a Geforce GTX660, 5 FPS on a Quadro 600
  • 60 M triangles -> ? FPS on a Geforce GTX660, 2 FPS on a Quadro 600

RAM
Regarding the RAM amount necessary for processing data, the size of both the mesh and the point cloud to be processed are to be considered.

For a mesh:
  • 5.8 M triangles -> 2 Go used on the RAM
  • 15 M triangles -> 5.5 Go used on the RAM
  • 60 M triangles -> 17 Go used on the RAM

For a point cloud:
  • 32 M points -> 1.1 Go used on the RAM
  • 100 M points -> 3.3 Go used on the RAM

So, if you know that you will be processing point cloud of 100 M of points, we recommend at least 2.5 times the RAM usage of 1 cloud, ie approximatly 10Go...

Number of Core / Core speed
Regarding the number of core usage in 3DReshaper, if we are not limited to a given number, we know that above 8, the performance increase is not so high.
We highly recommend at least 4 Cores.
And the speed of the core also has a great impact: the quickest, the best it is for 3DReshaper.
